Firebirds Peewee A-American defeated the Montgomery Blue Devils 3-1 to win the Pittsbugh Pre-Season Challenge championship on Sunday, September 23. Sebastian Elias got the Firebirds on the board in the first period off a turnover created by Nate Bayer. Judah Wanner scored the eventual game-winner on a solo rush which he finished off with a 25-foot shot low to the short side. Nate Bayer added a big insurance goal early in the third. Austin Enslin was huge in net, stopping 12 of 13 shots in the third period, including several on a Montgomery 5 on 3 power play successfully killed off by the 'Birds.
The Firebirds and Blue Devils had tied their round-robin game 1-1. After a 8-1 win against Mon Valley, the Firebirds needed a hard-fought 3-1 win against Mount Lebanon behind Gabe Deller's solid goaltending to qualify for the championship game. Head coach Andy Scott was pleased with the team's showing, "I thought that the whole team brought a consistently high level of competitive intensity to this tournament that we did not have in our last tournament (semi-final loss in the Iceworks Labor Day tournament). It was really nice to see them get rewarded for their effort.
The team finished the pre-season with a 6-1-1 record. They will open their DVHL season on Sunday, October 7th against arch-rival Hershey at Lancaster Ice Rink.
